| Аннотация: | The Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russia is a substantial landmass that is poorly documented in terms of most elements of biodiversity. Here we provide the first study of modern assemblages of testate amoebae, a widespread group of protists that are particularly abundant in soils. We present a data set of 78 widely distributed samples, including forest, fen, scrub and bog habitats. Testate amoebae are abundant and diverse across Kamchatka with 119 taxa identified. The assemblage is primarily composed of widespread taxa, but rarer occurrences such asCyclopyxis puteushint at important biogeographical differences that will require confirmation with molecular data. Assemblages from mineral soils are significantly different from those of peatlands with the former characterized by small idiosome taxa and the latter by larger taxa, often with secretion tests. Water table depth explained significant variance in the peatland samples, supporting the use of testate amoebae in palaeoecological studies. This study adds to our knowledge of the biodiversity of Kamchatka and the global biogeography of protists, and it paves the way for palaeoecological studies to understand long-term environmental change in this region. | |

| Аннотация: | The spatial genetic structure is a topical issue in the studies of various aspects of ecology and evolution. Using the multilocus autocorrelation method with hypervariable microsatellite genetic markers, we investigated a fine-scale pattern of genetic structure in 5 local populations of the common shrew Sorex araneus separated by distances of 300-1000 m (the Moscow chromosomal race). Spatial genetic autocorrelation analysis based on 5 microsatellite loci (expected heterozygosity >0.79) with 90 alleles revealed a consistent pattern of significant positive genetic structure. By testing the autocorrelation at multiple scales from 25 to 500 m, we found that positive spatial genetic structure is detectable in distance classes of <500 m. The weaker spatial genetic structure positively correlated with a higher ratio of nonresident individuals to residents' activity (number of captures). In contrast to nonresident animals, the residents demonstrated prominent genetic structure. Genetic difference (F-ST) between the populations was significant (0.016-0.051) and comparable with that between populations of different races analyzed previously (0.016-0.038). F-ST was not associated with geographic distance. These demographic patterns allowed us to propose a scheme of genetic-structure dynamics involving periodic appearance of more related local groups and renewal of allelic profiles from a common pool where the alleles are mixed. The scheme predicts fluctuating genetic structure and random similar differences among local populations. | |

| Аннотация: | Fifty-two species and intraspecific taxa of testate amoebae have been detected in 24 different habitats in the Belaya River basin (Northwestern Caucasus). Four types of communities are distinguished which differ in the composition of the complex of dominating species: freshwater species from bottom sediments in water bodies and water courses, soil-dwelling species from inundated parts of floodplains, a mixture of soildwelling and freshwater species in different littoral biotopes, and eurybiontic species in moss hummocks along the banks. | |

| Аннотация: | The smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) has a wide but fragmented distribution across the Western Palearctic, with limited records in Kazakhstan. This study aims to provide an updated distribution map and to explore the phylogenetic affinities of C. austriaca in Kazakhstan. The species had not been documented for over 60 years until its recent rediscovery in the region. Field surveys conducted between 2019 and 2024 in the West Kazakhstan and Aktobe regions have yielded novel records, including the southernmost observation in the Mugodzhar mountain range. Mitochondrial DNA analysis confirmed that the Kazakh populations belong to the Eastern lineage, sharing haplotypes with specimens from the northwestern Caucasus and Crimea. Habitat assessment revealed that the species’ distribution is restricted to open habitats of petrophytic and calciphyte steppe communities on chalks and rocky steppes. Of particular interest is that 70% of the observed individuals exhibited patternless coloration, suggesting the potential for regional morphological variation. These findings offer the first evidence for the phylogenetic affiliation of the smooth snake in Kazakhstan and reflect its rarity in the country, highlighting the need for local conservation efforts, including habitat protection and population monitoring. | |

| Аннотация: | We investigated the distribution of mitochondrial lineages of two species—the common roach Rutilus rutilus and Ponto-Caspian roach R. lacustris—in the broadest zone of their secondary contact, the Volga basin. For the purpose of species identification, we applied the approach of multiplex PCR based on species-specific divergences in sequences of the first subunit of cytochrome oxidase (COI) of mtDNA. A total of 1120 samples from 82 localities are analyzed. The distribution of certain mitochondrial lineages and their sympatric co-occurrence clarified for the Volga basin. Our study shows that R. rutilus is significantly predominant in the Upper Volga, while the Middle and Lower Volga is dominated by R. lacustris. The various hypotheses of formation of the broad spatial pattern of secondary contact are discussed. | |

| Аннотация: | The edible frog, Pelophylax esculentus, is a hybrid form that reproduces via clonal propagation of only one of the parental genomes through generations of hybrids while the genome of other parental species is eliminated during gametogenesis. Such reproductive ability requires hybrids to coexist with one of the parental species or rarely both parental species causing the formation of so-called population systems. Population systems and reproductive biology of water frogs from the east of the range remained partially unexplored. In this study, we investigated the distributions, population systems, genetic structure, types of gametes, and morphological variability of water frogs of the genus Pelophylax from the northeastern parts of their ranges (Mari El Republic and adjacent territories, Russia). We examined 1,337 individuals from 68 localities using morphological traits combined with DNA flow cytometry and a multilocus approach (fragments of a nuclear and two mitochondrial genes). We revealed five types of population systems: “pure” populations of the parental P. ridibundus (R) and P. lessonae (L), mixed populations of parental species (R-L) along and with their hybrids (R-E-L), as well as mixed populations of P. lessonae and P. esculentus (L-E). However, the “pure” hybrid (E) and the mixed P. ridibundus and P. esculentus (R-E) population systems were not found. All hybrids studied by DNA flow cytometry were diploid. Analysis of gametogenesis showed that the majority of hybrid males, as well as hybrid females from the L-E system, produced gametes with the P. ridibundus genome. However, in the R-E-L system, hybrid females were usually sterile. The reproduction of hybrids in such systems is primarily based on crosses of P. esculentus males with P. lessonae females. Molecular analysis showed the presence of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA introgression of the Anatolian marsh frog (P. cf. bedriagae) into both P. ridibundus and P. esculentus. The observations of alleles and haplotypes of P. cf. bedriagae in P. ridibundus and P. esculentus individuals from the same localities suggest de novo formation of local hybrids. However, the presence of the Balkan marsh frog (P. kurtmuelleri) haplotypes in local hybrids supports the hypothesis regarding the migration of old hemiclonal lineages from glacial refugia. Finally, the diagnostic value of various morphological characteristics was discussed. | |

| Аннотация: | Speciation, hybridization, and historical demography jointly shape evolutionary trajectories, yet their combined effects remain poorly resolved in many threatened mammals. We used single-nucleotide polymorphisms obtained by genome-wide double-digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing to assess evolutionary relationships, hybridization patterns, and demographic histories in three threatened European sousliks: Spermophilus citellus, Spermophilus suslicus, and Spermophilus odessanus. Population genomic analyses showed that all three species are genetically well differentiated, with the Dnieper River forming a major barrier to gene flow and with a narrow contact zone occurring only between S. citellus and S. odessanus in Moldova and western Ukraine. Genome polarization identified admixed individuals between S. citellus and S. odessanus, all carrying S. odessanus mitochondrial haplotypes. D-Statistics supported introgression between these species, and TreeMix inferred historical gene flow from S. citellus into S. odessanus. Spermophilus suslicus showed no evidence of admixture, consistent with its allopatric distribution and fixed karyotypic differences. Demographic reconstructions indicated that all three species experienced a pronounced bottleneck around the Last Glacial Maximum, followed by postglacial range expansion. Subsequently, S. suslicus maintained relatively stable population sizes, whereas S. citellus and S. odessanus underwent gradual long-term declines. Our findings provide a genomic foundation for European sousliks and demonstrate that effective conservation should recognize the distinct evolutionary histories of each species. | |

| Аннотация: | The report provides data on granulomatous inflammation in the small intestine of Pelophylax ridibundus, observed in exophytic outgrowths (diverticulums) of duodenum and caused by Brandesia turgida. Amphibians were collected from Protected Areas (Privolzhskaya Lesostep’ State Nature Reserve, Penza region, and Sosnovaya Roscha Forest Park near the town Yoshkar-Ola) during the field seasons of 2011–2018. An histological examination was made according to standard histological procedures; we used hematoxylin and eosin stain. The trematode Brandesia turgida was found not only in the Lieberkühn glands, but also in the serosa. Noncaseating epithelioid granulomas were localised in the serosa. Macrophages and single multinuclear PirogovLanghans giant cells were also detected in the serosa. Granular decay, puckering of nuclei and nuclear detritus were detected. Marked leukocyte infiltration with a significant predominance of eosinophils was observed. The periphery of such granulomas can be characterised by a lymphohistiocytic profile. Mycobacterial infection was not detected. The obtained data describe a new case of granulomatous inflammation in amphibians. | |

| Аннотация: | The inheritance of the size, color, and bioacoustic characteristics of russet (Spermophilus major), yellow (S. fulvus), and speckled (S. suslicus) ground squirrels in hybrids differing in their genetic status was studied. In a hybrid population of russet and yellow ground squirrels, ten individuals of S. major, ten individuals of S. fulvus, and 40 hybrids of S. major × S. fulvus were analyzed; in a hybrid population of russet and speckled ground squirrels, eleven individuals of S. major, eleven individuals of S. suslicus, and 24 hybrids of S. major × S. suslicus were analyzed. Hybrid individuals that are different in genetic status have been shown to demonstrate differentiation in the vector space of the variability range of the parental species. At the same time, both a shift in some categories of hybrids towards one of the hybridizing species and a significant deviation are noted. The results indicate an increase in the level of variability in size, color, and bioacoustic characters in hybrid populations associated with the erosion of the divergent hiatus of specific features of the parental forms due to the formation of a differentiated hybrid population. As hybrid individuals with different combinations of parental traits accumulate in the population, the situation arises in which a sufficient number of hybrids with an overall combination of parental traits (Hcomb) appear in this population. Such hybrid individualshave different combinations of species-specific markers in the homozygous state in their genotypes. In the hybrid population of the russet and yellow ground squirrels, the proportion of such hybrids, according to our data, is 22.5% (n = 40), and in the hybrid population of the russet and speckled ground squirrels, it is 12.5% (n = 24). This category of hybrid individuals can be considered as possible material for further microevolutionary events and the process of speciation. | |

| Аннотация: | Herein, we describe a new cryptic snake species of the genus Xenopeltis from Central Highlands of Vietnam: Kon Plông District, Kon Tum Province based both on morphological and molecular data. Xenopeltis intermedius sp. nov. is distinguished from the two known species by a combination of the following morphological characters. Xenopeltis intermedius sp. nov. differs from X. unicolor and X. hainanensis by the number of ventrals and subcau-dals. The skull is less elongated than in X. unicolor and somewhat more elongate than in X. hainanensis. X. inter-medius demonstrates differences in size, shape proportions and relief of the parietal bone and the number of teeth from X. hainanensis and X. unicolor. We provide a COI-based estimation of diversity of the genus Xenopeltis. Genetic divergence (p-distance) between Xenopeltis sp. nov. from Kon Tum Province, Central Highlands region of Vietnam, and two other congeners was 5.7% (for X. hainanensis) and 12.9% (for X. unicolor). The new species is currently known only from one locality from Central Highland and was recorded from 1500 to 2500 m a.s.l. in the evergreen polydominant forests in the mountainous regions of Kon Tum Province. This is the third species of Xenopeltis from Vietnam. © 2022 Folium Publishing Company. | |
